Job description

Do you want to contribute to the development of a new energy technology that can safely turn nuclear waste into emission-free energy? Are you excited about working in a hands-on deep tech start-up team that aims to make a huge impact? Do you like complex challenges? Then, we might be just the company you are looking for! We are looking for a driven Mechanical Calculation Engineer to join our innovative and international team.

About Thorizon

At Thorizon, we’re a passionate and rapidly growing team of 45 in Amsterdam and Lyon, all working together to develop a new nuclear power solution. We design and create frontier technology for Molten Salt Reactors (MSR).
Our purpose is to accelerate the availability of clean energy and help solve the climate crisis.

We are in the development phase and aim to solidify our design through analyses, experiments, prototyping, and partnerships. At Thorizon, we believe a strongly coupled multidisciplinary technology development requires a culture of full openness and transparency. That’s why we foster values like unity, communication, and support to ensure we grow together as a team while achieving our purpose.

Your mission
Are you passionate about designing cutting-edge mechanical systems and solving complex engineering challenges? Do you get energized by innovation, and transforming ideas into tangible solutions? You will directly contribute to the mechanical design analyses of our system, subsystems and components, supported by experimental validation and prototyping to accelerate towards realization of our advanced nuclear reactor technology. You will facilitate cross-functional collaboration to ensure seamless integration of other disciplines in the mechanical system design. Furthermore, you will drive initiatives for continuous improvement, quality assurance, validation and participation in external networks to stay at the forefront of industry developments. You get the unique opportunity to develop your ideas, explore various aspects of mechanical engineering, and play a crucial role in establishing the company’s success.

This role is based in Amsterdam, Netherlands or in Lyon, France.

In this role you will:
• Work within the Thorizon mechanical engineering team by providing functional support to system engineering leads as team member in multidisciplinary projects to progress the design, realisation and licensing
• Develop and refine models using FEA software such as ABAQUS or equivalent tools
• Validate your models with appropriate (analytical) tools, approaches and experience, and contribute to the definition and execution of experimental and prototyping projects
• Perform finite element calculations to analyse and validate the structural, thermal, and dynamic performance of mechanical systems and components 2 of 3
• Couple your analyses to other disciplines such as thermohydraulics, core physics and chemistry if necessary, and decouple where possible, including solid justification
• Interpret analysis results and prepare detailed technical reports and presentations
• Collaborate with design and development teams to provide insights and recommendations based on analysis results
• Optimize designs for performance, reliability, and manufacturability
• Stay updated on industry trends and advancements in FEA methodologies and tools
• Challenge the rest of the team when you foresee potential issues in the current design and be proactive and constructive in proposing solutions for those issues, and proactively reach out for help

Job requirements

About you:

• You have a Master's degree in mechanical engineering

• You have at least 3 years of experience in mechanical design and realization of systems, components, machines and equipment in a technically complex, multidisciplinary and innovative setting

• You have good knowledge of mechanical analysis by finite element method and design by rules, which you combine with a practical approach, supporting realization.

• Strong understanding of mechanical material properties and behavior and their effects in structural mechanics

• Good skills in CAE (SolidWorks) are appreciated

• Previous experience in the nuclear sector is not required, but interest in the energy and nuclear field, and in multidisciplinary complexity and innovation is essential

• Experience in projects including pressure vessels, pipings, large components, mechanical handling and cranes (knowledge of codes and norms such as Eurocodes, EN 13445; EN 11480, ASME BPVC; AFCEN codes, R5/R6 procedures) is a plus

• You have strong organizational and multitasking abilities, with attention to detail, quality assurance and accuracy

• You are an excellent communicator in English (working daily language), both spoken and written

• You are a team player; you like to be part of a larger project team for your day-to-day activities, and automatically feel responsibility for contributing

• You solve problems creatively and know when and how to involve other team members

• You like working in an agile manner and are comfortable with the fast-moving pace of a technological scale-up

• You are a hands-on self-starter who likes to work in a multicultural and dynamic environment that is growing fast

• You have an intrinsic motivation to make an impact and want to contribute to a responsible energy supply

What can you expect from us?

• Dynamic and ambitious team of nuclear technology professionals that are committed to solving today’s energy challenges

• Unique experience in a fast-growing VC-backed deep tech start-up 3 of 3

• Opportunity to work on a game-changing technology that reduces our carbon footprint and nuclear waste streams

• Competitive salary and an employee profit-sharing plan

• International work experience

• Office in the heart of Amsterdam or Lyon next to the Central station, including start-up vibes, office amenities, Thursday drinks and quarterly company team events.
